About Us

About Us

The Kespu’kwitk Métis Council was established in 1999 and is a member in good standing of the Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stocks Companies. We respect the rights and treaties of the Mi’kmaq of the province.

Our Purpose

KMC was created to foster, promote and preserve Métis identity and heritage. We provide education and leadership so that our members can reach their full cultural, social, and spiritual potential.

Our Values

The ultimate authority in KMC is its members. We believe that the community is more important than any given individual.

Our Vision

As Indigenous people under section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982, recognized and acknowledged by the case of Daniels v. Canada, we believe that all Métis are Indigenous under the Charter and entitled to the rights and responsibilities therein. Our goal is to be self-governing, as laid out in the final report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples.
