The 2026 Kespu’kwitk Métis Council’s AGM was held on September 29th in the Community Room of the Izaak Walter Killam Library in Yarmouth. We were pleased to host several members of the community, representatives from l’Association des Acadiens-Metis Souriquois (AAMS), and KMC members attending virtually over Zoom.
Reports were given by the President, the KMC genealogist, our Head Elder, and the chairs of the Youth committee and the Health and Wellness committee, as well as the office administrator, who presented the office expenses for the 2025/2026 fiscal year and the membership report. In the absence of our Captain of the Hunt, a summary of the year’s bag limits and open seasons accompanied the reports and agenda. We note that the positions of Treasurer and Vice-President are still open. In the absence of a treasurer, the office administrator and President are overseeing the financial concerns of the organization.
A lively and positive discussion took place regarding our collaboration in June with the AAMS, and our hope to offer an expanded event in the coming year. Those in attendance enjoyed a meal of rappie pie, desserts, and drinks.
An event, hosted by KMC, marking the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation took place on September 30th at the Yarmouth Museum. Following introductory remarks by the chair of the Health and Wellness committee, Carol Spinney, an engaging and informative presentation was given by Andrée Noye from Circé and Medée in Pubnico, on plants of significance to the Mi’kmaq people of this region.
The aims of the event were to bring awareness of this day of Truth and Reconciliation, which focuses on the lasting ramifications of residential schools; to support local causes related to the effects of residential schools, in particular, those dealing with food insecurity; and to foster closer relationships between communities in the Yarmouth area.
This event, funded by the government of Canada, under the program Commémoration Canada – Commemorate Canada, Programme des célébrations et commémorations-Celebration and Commemoration Program, Ministère du Patrimoine canadien-Department of Canadian Heritage, was attended by MLA Nick Hilton; KMC members, the region’s newly appointed Returning Officer; and several interested members of the public. Our organization will be giving a food donation to the Free Pantry on Starr’s Road.
